Treasures of Turkmenistan

Overview

There are three historical monuments inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List within our country. Ancient Merv — the largest city of the medieval world, the center of the Great Silk Road, a glorious city that flourished and was destroyed. Kunya-Urgench — the capital of the powerful Khwarezmian state, famous for the 60-meter Kutlug-Timur minaret, the tallest in Central Asia. The Parthian Fortresses of Nisa — the capital of an empire that rivaled mighty Rome as far back as the 3rd century BC. The nature of Turkmenistan is equally astonishing. In the heart of the Karakum Desert lies the Darvaza Crater — a burning crater with a diameter of 70 meters that has been blazing continuously for more than fifty years. Yangykala amazes visitors with its red, orange and white colored rocks. The Bakharden Cave attracts travelers with its underground warm lake at +37 degrees.
